Cold Q & A

What is a cold?

The common cold is a viral infection that affects your nose, throat, and airways. Typically, a cold is not a serious or concerning illness, but it can make you uncomfortable and could prevent you from working or going to school.

You may catch a cold easier if you are a smoker, over the age of 65, or have a suppressed immune system for any reason. You can contract a cold at any time of year, but viruses are especially prevalent during the fall and winter months.

Even healthy adults can expect to have as many as three colds a year, which typically resolve without medical intervention.

What are the symptoms of a cold?

When you have a cold, you may have symptoms that include:

  • Body aches
  • Mild headache
  • Runny nose
  • Nasal congestion
  • Sneezing
  • Coughing
  • Sore throat
  • Low-grade fever
  • Fatigue
  • Poor sleep
  • Decreased appetite

Typically, cold symptoms resolve within a week to 10 days. In some cases, cold symptoms could evolve into a more serious condition, such as an upper respiratory infection, strep throat, ear infection, or pneumonia.

When do I need to see a doctor about my cold?

Your cold symptoms may be cause for concern if you have:

  • A fever higher than 101.3° F
  • A fever lasting five days or more
  • A fever that returns after a period of no fever
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Wheezing
  • Severe or worsening cough
  • Severe head, throat, or sinus pain

The Universal Family Medicine team can evaluate your concerning symptoms, test you for serious conditions, and create a treatment plan that helps you get to feeling better.

What are the treatments for a cold?

In most cases, your cold symptoms need to run their course. Treatments typically focus on easing your discomfort and supporting your immune system as you fight the cold virus.

Your treatment plan may include:

  • Getting lots of rest
  • Drinking lots of fluids
  • Avoiding sugary drinks or foods
  • Using a humidifier at night
  • Drinking warm liquids, like tea or soup
  • Gargling with salt water
  • Elevating your head while sleeping
  • Medications, such as decongestants or antihistamines
  • Nutritional supplements, such as vitamin C
